Wine Events: Week of March 14

Party people —  Sorry for being AWOL, but a combo of work and weekends in Tahoe left me with little time to write.  BUT good news is there is a weekend of wine soaked events whether you want to drive south to Paso Robles for Zin Fest, up to Sonoma for Pigs & Pinot (assuming you got your tix early) or stay local for some great Rhone varietals from a Berkeley-based winery.

Thurs. March 18:  Ed Kurtzman’s wines at Arlequin (Hayes Valley)

Arlequin Wine Merchants
384 Hayes Street
San Francisco, CA

PinotFile.com recently called Ed Kurtzman “one of the most laid back winemakers you’ll ever come across.” (profile here).   Really?  I mean, this is a guy who makes wine for 5 different labels — ROAR, August West, Freeman, and Sandler Wine Co.  If he can do all that AND be super laid back, then this is definitely someone I’d like to meet.   Stop by Arlequin and check out Eddie K’s portfolio.

Fri. March 19 – Sun. March. 21:  Pigs and Pinot Weekend (Healdsburg)
Hotel Healdsburg
Healdsburg, CA

When I first heard someone mention that there ws an event called “Pigs & Pinot,” I though I had died and had gone to heaven.  I mean, yum.  YUM!  Charlie Trotter  and the good folks at Hotel Healdsburg are hosting their annual pork-a-licious event.  While the event is sold out, keep an eye on craigslist for anyone looking to off some tix.

Fri. March 19 – Sun. March. 21: Paso Robles Zin Festival (Paso (duh))
Many Locations
Paso Robles, CA

You like your wine big and bold.  You want a “wow” factor.  you’re interested in discovering an u-and coming wine region.  And you’ve got some free time this weekend.  Come on down to Paso for their annual celebration of one of California’s premiere varietals.  Lots of wineries are hosting activities this weekend — you can find them all through the link above (keep an eye out for events at Adelaida, Four Vines, J. Dusi, and Turley).

Sat. March 20:  A Donkey and Goat Open House (Berkeley)
2323 B Fourth Street (@ Bancroft)
Berkeley, CA

1pm – 5pm – $30 ($20 in advance – click here)

Twice a year, this lil’ gem of a winery opens their doors to release their latest wines.  This time around,  you’ll get to taste 7 wines (keep room for the Mourvedre!), along with dishes from a soon-to-open Berkeley restaurant (Locanda da Eva).  You’ll get a souvenir Riedel Glass, or if you want to save some more money, bring your own glass and get $10 off a $50 purchase of wines.
